In History of Album Cover Design class, we were given the prompt of redesign an album from any band of our choice. I chose to redesign the album Mutter by Rammstein, a band I have been listening to since I was little. Rammstein is a German Hard Rock/Industrial Metal band known for their pyrotechnics, obscene lyrics, and disturbing imagery.
The original cover shows a dead fetus photographed by Daniel and Geo Fuchs. The song Mutter portrays lead singer Till Lindemann’s unhappy relationship with his mother, and tells a story of a child born not of a mother and father, but through experiments. The song has been compared to Frankenstein by Mary Shelley, because of the character’s need for revenge on his parents.
I selected a vintage 1930s photo of light treatment therapy for children, adults and pigs. The photo has a very eerie and disturbing quality that ties into the aesthetic of Rammstein’s existing catalog.
